film viewing over past month
• Where do you watch films?
I usually watch films at home or at the cinema. e.g. East Dulwich Picture House or the Ritzy.
• What devices do you use to watch films? How does this change the viewing experience?
My laptop or projector screen at home. When I watch films on my projector screen the experience with the film is more interactive - I usually enjoy the film more as there is surround sound speakers and the screen is larger. Whereas, when I watch films on my laptop I do not always connect with the film in the same way and tend to get distracted more easily.
• Are there certain films you prefer to see at the cinema? If so which?
Personally, I prefer to watch films at the cinema that are known to be about a serious or sad topic. This is because I feel as though I can connect with the film more than when I am watching it at home, as my entire attention is focused on the film. For example, I wanted to see Dunkirk at the cinema as the sound and aesthetics could be appreciated more on a big screen.
• With whom do you watch films?
I usually watch films with my parents or my friends.
• What attracted you to the film? Why did they choose to see it? (The social aspect of watching a film is important as it can affect your attitude towards it. Have you been ‘pressured’ into seeing a film you weren’t interested in by a friend etc?). Is it a hotly anticipated film (i.e. Star Wars Episode VIII) or one that only serves a niche audience?
Usually, recommendations from friends or fast-pased trailers attract me to go and see a film. However, the director or writer often influences my decision to go and watch a film. Recently, I went to see 'Molly's Game' because Aaron Sorkin wrote the screenplay and I am doing an online screenwriting course, led by him. Therefore, this persuaded me to go and see the film with my mum who was also interested in seeing it for the same reason.
How did you respond to the film? Was it a spectacle, moving, frightening etc.?
I found the film both funny and moving, and I thought the screenplay was a really clever combination of diegetic dialogue and voice over, which I liked a lot.
• Following our trips to the Ritzy and the IMAX. Discuss the recent changes to digital projection.
Recently, due to increased screen-sizes, such as the IMAX screen, the projection of films has enhanced greatly. Secondly, the visual experience of the spectator has improved due to the use of 3D in films. When we went to see Blade Runner 2049, the CGI was amazing, which is another change that has been made to digital projection.
